5Boiler outdoor temperature lockout2/16/23.Press the menu button once to SP which is the setpoint for the outside temperature currently it is 55°. Press the up or down arrow to change it and then press the menu button to accept the change. if there’s no change after a few seconds, it will cancel automatically. The outdoor air temperature is 59° and it is a currently about 68° in the sanctuary with the boiler locked out at 55°. This control prevents the boiler from running it it is too warm outside thus preventing the overheating of the building.

6Background information/ Troubleshooting Information
-
7Pump 1 Serves North LoopAll three pumps are overhead in the mechanical room.
All three pumps have spring loaded couplers to the impeller. If the impeller breaks the motor will make a loud sound so shut down the pump immediately. You may hear this sound from the atrium/chapel entry hallway on the first floor. -
8North Loop Return Service ValveThis is the North Loop return service valve and is located in the undercroft adjacent to the legacy steam organ pit.
-
9Pump 2 serves the Prayer/Prep RoomsCoupler replaced on 12/09/24
-
10Pump 3 Serves The South Loop Of The Building
Originating in the boiler room, the exits the boiler room and crosses the hall and enters the undercroft heading south. The loop continues from there. The loop has been labeled.
-
11Pump Switches Control the PumpsLocated on the west wall of the mechanical room.
-
12Prayer Room Air HandlerThis air handler has an internal filter that requires changing every fall. The access door is located near the bottom of the cabinet.
This is the coil which is connected to the main boiler. There is a valve connected to the thermostat as well.
-
13Prep Room SupplyThis is overhead in the undercroft near the mechanical room hallway.
-
14Automatic Bleeder ValvesSeveral are located throughout the sanctuary. There is one on the balcony radiator. There is one near the prep room supply in the undercroft. There is two in the boiler mechanical room. There may be more.

15Sanctuary Boiler Room Controls 20172/2/17 Todd Baechle and Scott from Debra rewired the entire control box for the boiler and associated equipment.
The grey wires in the upper left conduit are going to the two freeze stats for the choir air handlers and the remote thermostat in the choir loft.
The new configuration allows the boiler to fire on heat call with the blowers on, running continuously when the heat is satisfied the boiler will stop but the blowers will continue running.
We can zone the areas of the Sanctuary with the temperature controls on the Univents but the Master Thermostat must be set high enough to keep the highest point satisfied because if it shuts down the other areas will come up short.
Just thinking, if the desired heating temp. in the back of the sanctuary is 70º the Master in the choir loft may need to be set at 72º or higher to achieve the goal on Sunday when the choir is in place with the theatrical lights on.
For cooling, the Master will need to be lower, perhaps at 74º to achieve 76º at the rear of the Sanctuary.
The lead time and mass of the building will make changes happen slowly.
In the future we can add electric chilled water valves to conserve on sanctuary cooing when the Ministry Center demand would historically call for overcooling the sanctuary. These valves would only close if the demand in the sanctuary was less than the M.C.
Choir room and Prayer room air handers can be converted to heat pumps for local, on demand heating.
Sanctuary boiler outdoor air lock out setting.
4/12/17: The sensor outside air temperature is 65° and the set point is 60° so the boiler is not running. Weather underground is 64°

16Old Sanctuary Boiler NotesOld Sanctuary boiler temperature normally is 120° when it’s warm outside and up to 180° when it’s cold out. The system pressure normally is around 20 pounds and it can climb up to 25 pounds. The relief valve is going to release at around 30 pounds.
11/2/14 Sanct. temp. 120° pressure 0 lbs. perhaps the gauge is not working. 11/3/14 8 pounds @100°. Sanctuary lift height is 21 feet (from the boiler basement floor to the top of the balcony Univac. 12 pounds required.
11/3/14 M. C. Boiler 13 pounds pressure at 138°
MC Lift height is 32' (basement floor to second floor ceiling) 17lbs is required.
Gary told me how to determine the proper pressure in the hot water boiler system.
The pressure reading should be made when the circulating pump is switched off. The circulating pump can inflate the pressure little bit.
2.31 feet per pound or .43 lbs per foot and add 3 lbs extra.
15 lbs should do the trick in the sanctuary.
PRV Pressure regulating valve for Barnabas boiler is located above the boiler to the hall side of the room.

17Sanctuary setback, temperature observation 10/202234° outside, 64° in the sanctuary and falling 6:40 AM. I turned on the boiler and in 20 minutes the temperature was 65 in the sanctuary. This leads me to think we can have setbacks in the sanctuary. Room temperature was 66 at 7:30 AM so that’s a 2°rise in 50 minutes. From cold. At 8:05 AM the temperature is 68°. Setpoint of 68° was achieved sooner than 10:am.

18Sanctuary HVAC description 1/11/2022The sanctuary thermostat is located in the boiler room. This is configured so in the heat mode the occupied setting is fans on in the unoccupied mode is fans automatic. They temperature regulates whether the pumps are running or not. The boiler water temperature is regulated by the outside air controller. The colder it gets outside the hotter the water gets inside.
The prayer room air handler has an outside air conditioner compressor. This will run independently of the air conditioning in the sanctuary. The prayer air handler also has outside air which comes from the basement window in the store room next to the boiler room. This has a electromechanical damper which is controlled through the air handler.
The Univent in the balcony does not have a heat coil only a cooling coil. There is a radiant heat coil in the wall which we have no control over.
The new high efficiency boiler can throttle down to 14% of capacity to save energy. It is about 25% smaller in capacity than the old Dunkirk boiler. When it is 25 degrees outside the boiler is running at 27% so it has savings in that way that the Dunkirk couldn't do.
