Mark out the area where the foundation will be built. Excavate the area to a depth of at least 600mm. Remove all debris and level the surface of the trench.
Prepare a mixture of cement, sand, and coarse aggregate in the ratio 1:2:4. Fill the trench with the concrete mixture up to the level of the short wall. Use a spirit level to ensure that the concrete footing is level.
Place a row of double bricks on top of the concrete footing. Use a spirit level to ensure that the bricks are level. Use a brick jointer to scrape off any excess mortar from the joints.
Place a second row of double bricks on top of the first course. Offset the bricks so that the end of the second row falls in the middle of the first row. Use a spirit level to ensure the bricks are level. Apply mortar to the vertical edges of the bricks of the first course.
Continue laying courses of double bricks until the wall is the required height. Ensure that the joints are staggered so that they are not in line with each other. Use a spirit level to ensure each course of bricks is level. Add weep holes to the short wall for drainage.
Fill the cavity between the double brick short wall with concrete. This creates a solid wall that provides greater stability and structural support for the glass house.
Lay a strip of damp proof course (DPC) over the top of the double brick short wall, overlapping the wall on both sides. Use a mastic adhesive to seal the DPC to the wall. The DPC prevents moisture from penetrating the wall and entering the glass house.
