(6600-T) Personalized Professional Development Options

Many of our teachers found these videos and articles helpful as an introduction. Our goal is to provide you with as much training and support as possible to ensure a successful school year with us. We recommend focusing on one topic a week, starting at the top of the list. The resources marked with an asterisk (*) are the most important.

    Barney Charter School Initiative

Here you will explore BCSI and Hillsdale College publications. Begin with learning about the mission of the Barney Charter School Initiative. Explore the BCSI K-12 At Home (Parents and Teachers) video collections.

The BCSI Classical Classroom blog, written by Dr. O’Toole, Assistant Provost of K-12 Education at Hillsdale. The podcasts are another valuable resource to explore a variety of topics. You will find many great topics and resources to support your classroom instruction.

The BCSI YouTube offers a variety of videos to support distance learning and some that will help with ideas for teachers.

Hillsdale College offers several free, online courses. I recommend the K-12 Education.

    Classical Education

This section offers a variety of resources to learn more about classical education. The Introduction to Classical Education is a quick read and provides a thorough explanation of classical education.

I recommend registering for the free, classical magazine, as it is mailed each quarter and offers a lot of interesting articles to support the various aspects of classical education.

The rest of the resources will be useful when you are ready to explore these specific areas.

    Classroom Management

Classroom management in a classical school is about laying a foundation with procedures, arrangement of the classroom and holding scholars accountable to the classroom expectations, which includes modeling the pillars of virtue. We do not use color coded clip charts or work toward earning treats of any type. We avoid anything transactional and strive for positive reinforcement and intrinsic motivation.

In this section, you will want to watch all of the videos in the planning section and review the documents in the during class section.

    English Language Arts

This section explores all components of English Language Arts. Grammar is taught, using Well-Ordered Language, beginning in 3rd grade.

Access Literacy begins in Kindergarten and is taught through 3rd grade. The literacy program is intensive and will require a great deal of training.

The literature section provides a general overview of a literature lesson/class and how to annotate, which is something we will discuss at future trainings.

    Singapore Math

Begin with the three articles in the Singapore section to better understand Singapore Math and the reason we use it. “The Key Components in a Math Class” and “5 Elements of a Good Math Class” are videos produced by BCSI and provide a great explanation of what we expect to see in a math class.

The blog article “Paul Lockhart on Teaching Math” is also important to read to have an understanding of our philosophy of teaching math.

Every grade level emphasizes math facts as you will see in the Math Facts by Grade Level document.

Bar modeling begins in 3rd grade, so those teaching 3rd grade or higher should explore these videos.

    History

Begin this section by reviewing the History Scope and Sequence to understand how history is taught at your academy. You will notice that every grade studies world history in the fall (first semester) and American in the spring (second semester). We are structured chronologically and you will see that world history is a 5 year, chronological study and our scholars will study exploration through the Civil War twice, in grades 1-5. The primary years will provide basic storytelling for scholars to have the exposure and they will engage in a deeper study in the intermediate grades.

The “Teaching History Classically” video, from BCSI, walks you through how to teach a history lesson.

Additional resources are provided to plan lessons.
