How to create a signup form in Action Network

Having a generic signup form is a really powerful tool for your group. It offers people who are interested in your group’s work an easy way to sign up and stay updated on your activities. And a way for you to grow your list and build your power. Setting up a signup form is easy, and you can even embed it on your website.
  1. 1

Hover over the "Start Organising" Menu and click "Forms"

  2. 2

Give your form a name, something like "Get updates from Fossil Free Springfield"

And add a description. Something that says who you are and the type of updates that people can expect to receive by signing up to your list.
  3. 3

    Recommended: remove the "goal slider"

Click the "remove goal slider" button. For a generic signup form, a goal slider is an unnecessary distraction so we'd recommend removing it.
  4. 4

    Optional: Customise the form questions

Click "Add or Edit Additional Form Questions" to open the form editor. One additional field that would be a good idea to add is phone number. Phone numbers are powerful because if you are recruiting for an event or action, phone calls remain the most effective way to reach and mobilise people.

To add a phone number field, chose the phone number from the prebuilt questions dropdown menu. And then drag the field into the box of the left and then click save form.
  5. 5

Click "Save and go to next step"

  6. 6

Optional: Add your own thank you message

  7. 7

    Click "Save & Publish"

  8. 8

    Customise the response options

When people fill out your form, they will be sent a confirmation email. You should customise this email with information about your group and other ways people can get involved.

    Customise the email text

There is some default text which asks users to share the action. It's fine, but a bit generic and impersonal. It's a good idea to at least change who the email comes from (the name of a member of your group is a good idea, to make it more personal) and make the reply to address an email address that you monitor so that you can see and respond to questions that people may ask.

    Customise Sharing Options

Facebook can be a really great way to reach new people and collect signatures for your petition so it is worth taking the time to make sure links to your petition look good on Facebook. Think about the links that get your attention on Facebook, what is it about those that grab your attention? What about the image, headline or description grabbed your attention?

You can customise the way links to your petition look when they are shared in Facebook easily.

Go the the "Sharing Options" tab and then change the information in the Facebook box. Keep your description short and chose an image that will grab attention.

Recommended: Embed the form on your website

If you have a website you can embed the signup form on your homepage so that people viewing your website can easily sign up to relieve updates.

Copy the code in the "embed this action" box on the right and paste it into the code of your website. If you are using a world.350.org site, there are more detailed instructions here.
