(6300-T) Teacher Observations by Head of School/Principal or Dean of Students

Role of Principal/Dean of Students:  to observe lesson and give feedback, to be a constant resource for teachers, to provide guidance and encouragement.

Components of a good lesson:  
  • Students enter class quietly
  • Teacher is at the door or in front of the class greeting students
  • Class starts on time
  • Students are seated in desks with books and materials ready
  • “Big Ideas”/overview of lesson/outline are on the board
  • Assignment is on the board to be copied by students
  • Attendance is taken silently while students copy assignment (check seating chart)
  • Homework is checked and gone over briskly
  • Lesson is clear and rapidly paced
  • Board or documents projected used as tools for student comprehension
  • Teacher answers questions and stays on track
  • Instruction consumes entire period
  • Brief wrap up/review at end of class
  • Teacher dismisses class on time
Miscellaneous factors:
  • Teacher rapport with students
  • Inviting, informative, appropriate environment (room decorations and organization)
  • Classroom management
  • Teacher attention to students’ needs
  • Content of lesson
  • Knowledge of teacher
  • Teacher enthusiasm
